An Affair to Forget
Strong Waters, the latest offering from local playwright Claire Zaslav and director Margaret VandenBerghe at 12th Avenue Arts, treads old water in its cliched and at times unintentionally bizarre portrayal of a rekindled love affair.
I had the opportunity to see Andelana at Dukesbay Theater this Sunday. One faithful night in 1899, a 4-masted barque called The Andelana sank to the bottom of Commencement Bay, where it remains to this very day. There were no survivors save for one crewman who sought medical treatment for his tooth. Since that day, rumors have circulated around that ship, creating talks of ghosts and a curse. Tacoma playwright Roger Iverson brings to life the story of the Andelana on the stage of the Dukesbay Theater. This production was performed for the first time ever in Tacoma on October 27th at the Dukesbay Theater.
Awe-inspiring Historical Drama
An exceptional production in every way, Last Drive to Dodge, opened last weekend at Taproot’s Jewel Mainstage, directed by the venerable Valerie Curtis-Newton. It was extraordinary in every way, the script by Andrew Lee Creech, the superb acting, the lovely accompanying music, the evocative lighting effects and the history lessons gently woven into the plot. As a joint production of the Hansberry Project and Taproot it was a tribute to a marvelous partnership.

Origin of the term “Gaslighting”
A casualty of Covid, Angel Street by Patrick Hamilton opened two weekends late at Woodinville Rep. However, this calamity did not in any way affect the quality of this exceptional production directed by Hjamler Anderson, whose attention to detail served the production to a T.
Juliette Carrilo’s I Am Not Your Perfect Daughter will make you laugh for two hours while also reaching deep into your heartstrings with its honest representation of grief, generational trauma, social inequalities, familial expectations and the struggles of undocumented and 1st generation immigrants in the United States. Based on Erika Sánchez’s novel, Seattle Rep’s latest production – which is also the West Coast premiere of the play – centers around Júlia, a 15-year-old Mexican American grappling with the death of her older sister, her parent’s expectations, her dreams of becoming a famous writer and her own coming of age.
Most people probably know Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, winner of a Pulitzer, a Tony, and a Drama Desk award. With thousands of productions from high school theatre to Broadway, it even has a street in New Hampshire dedicated to it. If you don’t know it, don’t worry, you can still watch Pony World Theatre’s production without a hitch, as it sets up its audience with a summary of the original Our Town before diving into their rendition. Wilder’s play takes place in the small town of New Hampshire, Grover’s Corners, where nothing really happens in the relative peacefulness of the early 1900s. As such, the play is about community and small towns and appreciating even the uneventful in life.
