Music, film, art and more coming this week to 18th and Union

The Erin Jorgensen Festival (EJF) is a slightly tongue-in-cheek mini-arts festival chock-full of performances, mini-classes, films, record listening, and more. Anchored by daily “Bach & Pancakes”  performances (a Bach cello suite performed on a 5-octave concert marimba, accompanied by pancakes), the eclectic festival lineup includes music by alt-bluegrass trio The Half Brothers; electric cello with Lori Goldston, percussion/electronics with Aaron Michael Butler; intimate acoustic music from composer Benjamin Marx, and more.

A Beach, or a Strange Place Called Grief

A Story of Grief and Self-Discovery by Radial Theatre Project

When Eurydice died Orpheus was so overcome by grief that he descended into the underworld to bring her back. He charmed Cerberus and Hades himself into letting his lover live again and only failed because of his own doubt. It’s this loss on which this play is based, a feeling so intense “all the rules are changed.” Zinnie Harris wrote the story of Robyn and Helen, two lovers who get marooned after a boating accident and are forced to confront their grief.

Great concept, amazing delivery, not so good comedy

Put Your Hands Together for Woody Shticks and Pearl Lam at 18th and Union

Comedians Pearl Lam and Woody Shticks come together in a versatile, expressive, true-to-the-times comedy, and use laughter to deal with complex topics of childhood trauma, violence, animal endangerment, sexual freedom, queerness and identity. All the while dabbing into nonsensical skits that help lighten the mood of the overall performance. In truth, it’s a great combination of themes and emotions but that needs a high level of precision to be pulled off.

Liquid Hot-Hilarious and Profound

Comic Stripper Delivers the Goods

The first Woody Shticks show I saw also took place on a dismal rainy day in January, when I was feeling more than depressed. (and had now idea what the show was about) I struggled to get to 18th and Union, but by the end of the evening, I had spent so much time laughing and feeling connected to the comic genius entertaining us, and indeed to the whole audience, that I exited in great spirits, as did everyone else.
I called my 21 year old daughter, who said “This doesn’t sound like a show you would like.” She was sooo wrong!!!

Sugar Plum Gary- A Six-Footer in Red Feet Pajamas

The Best Christmas Miracle is Just Waking Up!

On a very stormy night, when the winds were blowing, when the rain was pelting down and branches were scraping not just the roof of my car but even the hood, I had the pleasure to participate in a heart-warming but irreverent “participantry” hosted by Sugar Plum Gary aka Emmett Montgomery, in the small intimate space at 18th and Union. It was one hour of sheer delight, as Sugar Plum Gary dressed in a bright red onesie answered questions from the audience about Santa Claus and Christmas.
