Loosing your cultural identity in a Classroom in Iran

The Pulitzer prize winning play English, a co-production of Artswest and Seda-Iranian Theatre Ensemble, opened this weekend. The action takes place in 2008 in an English classroom in Iran where four very different students are preparing for the all-important TOEFL prior to emigrating to English speaking countries. Author Sanaz Toossi, uses the students attitudes towards learning English as a vehicle to explore issues of ethnic identity and loss.

Matt and Ben – The Comedic Tale of Two Actors’ Dreams

This Season, going with the theme of “Sometimes I Dream”, Artswest starts with their production of Matt & Ben, an acidic two-person comedy written by Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers. The play, directed by Zenaida Rose Smith, is a rather satirical look at the lives of famous American actors, Matt Daemon and Ben Affleck before their rise to stardom, and seek to fulfill their dreams of writing a script, the two discover the real and imaginary troubles of trying to work together. This production was performed for the first time in Seattle on September 7th, at the Artswest Theater in West Seattle. The play originally premiered at New York’s Fringe Festival in 2002 and was the winner of the 2002 Fringe NYC Award.

The Tony Award winning rock musical , Hedwige and the Angry Inch, opened with an explosion of joy, mirth and sheer entertainment this weekend at Artswest.

Originally an off-Broadway in 1998, then a Broadway sensation in 2014, with lyrics by Stephen Trask and a book by John Cameron Mitchell it is also a film. With a main character who is “genderqueer,” it nevertheless has universal appeal

A Blast to the Past with “ZACH”

Join Artswest Theatre for a night of nostalgia!

Filled with satirical comedy and 90s television references, ZACH offers rooms of chuckles and nostalgia at Artswest Theatre. The enthusiasm of director Sara Porkalob and the wonderful talents of Amber Walker and Michael Nevárez really shine on Christian St. Croix’s playwright in the production of the show. Referencing some of the classic 90s high school sitcoms such as Boy Meets World, Full House, and Saved By The Bell, you are sure to be filled with laughs and warmth with the production of ZACH.

An Endless Shift, A Horrifying Reality

A collection of healthcare professionals’ stories working through the COVID-19 pandemic

ArtsWest’s production of An Endless Shift is a documentary theatre project devised by Gloria Alcalá and Alma Davenport and is performed by Gloria Alcalá. Located at ArtsWest Theatre, An Endless Shift shares the stories of five healthcare professionals through the reenactment of their responses to interview questions. In this unique production, Gloria Alcalá single-handedly reenacts each healthcare professional’s responses sharing each person’s experience through their entry into healthcare and the nightmare that they were faced with, COVID-19.
