Deers or is it Cheers

For their last Mid-week show of their 30th Season, Annex Theatre, presented Deers by Marcus Gorman, an entertaining spoof of the long running TV Sit-com Cheers. In four episodes spread over 11 years, they “aired” the pilot from Season 1, jumped to Season 5 in the next scene, and showed scenes from Season 8 and 11 after the intermission. However, instead of humans inhabiting a bar, there was a tight-knit group of friends, all of whom were animals, from different species, having various kinds of healthy and unhealthy social bar-like interaction.

Enroll in “Nite Skool” with The Libertinis at Annex Theatre

The Libertinis’ “Nite Skool,” performed at the Annex Theatre, is a hilarious, raunchy comedy show with a social conscience. It takes on the aesthetic of the after-school-special era of teen sitcoms, but the subjects it tackles are anything but dated. “Nite Skool” aims to both make you laugh and challenge widely-held beliefs perpetuated by schools, and it usually succeeds.

“Nite Skool,” written by Max Kirchner and the ensemble, opens with a woman realizing she is unprepared for the realities of adult life. She decides to go to Nite Skool [sic] to “fill her knowledge holes.” The show takes us through a school day (night?), using each “class” to tackle a social issue and/or tell jokes that would have definitely gotten you sent out in the hallway…

Waning at Annex Theatre

On a rain sodden, midweek night on Capitol Hill, Annex Theatre presented a unique and thought provoking production, Waning. Playwright Kamaria Hallum-Harris filled her fifty-minute play with startling juxtapositions pitting the horrific history of the treatment of African Americans in the early part of the 20th century with a young black woman, Luna (Danela Butler), searching for her sexual identity today.

The Lost Girls

This Is Not Your Average All-Girls Summer Camp

The Lost Girls is a truly rare production that has you laughing your heart out and thinking about some of the world’s most pressing ideological concerns at the same time: sexuality, feminism, and privilege. Running from October 28th to November 19th at Annex Theater in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, this is a production that will do anything (and everything) but disappoint.
