It seems this summer, Volunteer Park has been attracting some truly talented outdoor shows. Following hard upon Greenstage’s excellent production of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, Theater22 opened a truly exquisite adaptation of Lewis Carrol’sAlice in Wonderland, complete with music, a bit of camp, as well as witty references to the pandemic, Seattle and indeed Gracie Slick.

Accessible Shakespeare in the Park
Like its companion piece, 12th Night, The Tempest, which opened in West Seattle this weekend, is a one hour abridged version performed by only four actors. One of Shakespeare’s last plays it uses the familiar plot of a shipwreck, deposed rulers, young lovers adding magic and sorcery. Many critics think of it as Shakespeare’s Swan Song.
Accessible Shakespeare in the Park
In addition to their mainstage, full-length production of a Shakespeare play every summer, Greenstage also tours Seattle parks with “Backyard Bard” hour-long, abridged versions of Shakespeare.s play, using only four actors playing multiple roles. The shows concentrate on the main plot points and are short so that children can get an introduction to Shakespeare.

A deck for a stage, an MFA grad to act

For the first post-pandemic, live in-person show, I had the honor to be invited to review Blackout-Recovering from Trauma on a Porch, a hilarious but insightful one-person show, by Hailey Henderson. Using humor, insight, brilliant comic timing and an excellent script, Henderson dissects three abusive relationships, and her struggles to break free and recover.
Best Dream I have seen
Directed by Taylor Davis, Greenstage opened the in-person outdoor theater season in Volunteer Park with A Midsummer Night’s Dream, perhaps the best outdoor Shakespeare production I have seen in 30 years in Seattle.
