Art in the Hood-Max Marlett’s Virtual Gallery
Along with the antique shops and the Farmer’s market, one of the extra-curricular benefits of seeing shows at ArtsWest is their art exhibits in the beautiful lobby. In keeping with the pandemic-induced trend of streaming performing art online, ArtsWest has decided to create a “Virtual Gallery” of artist Max Marlett’s paintings.
Although the screen does not do justice to his paintings as the texture of his oil brush strokes cannot physically be fully represented on the screen, his paintings are very stark and evoke powerful human emotions.
Among the many paintings I liked, I particularly liked Shipwreck (shown above)and his other paintings of storms along seashore; however, I am unable to do justice to his work-I cannot analyze it, but I urge everybody to take the opportunity to browse this free exhibit now that all the museums are closed or restricted. It speaks to these tumultuous times.
Many of the other theatres in town also have art exhibits in their lobbies, especially 18th and Union; it is a wonderfully enjoyable experience to peruse the art, while waiting for the show. Perhaps other theatres will follow ArtsWest’s example and have a “Virtual Gallery.”
