Seattle Shakespeare Company’s latest adaption of Comedy of Errors began last weekend and has put a new twist on the classic concept, with its small ensemble cast of five actors playing eighteen different characters at once.
Chaos due to mistaken identity
Directed by Jimmy Shields, Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, opened this past weekend at Seattle Center. First performed on the Feast of Holy Innocents ( December 28th) in 1594, at the Hall of Gray’s Inn, one of the inns of court, in 1594, it has been adapted many times into plays, musicals and opera.

Sherwood-The Adventures of Robin Hood,a comedic rendering of the medieval tale, opened at Issaquah’s Village Theatre, this past weekend. It was part English pantomine with audience participation, part Monty Python sketches, part slap-stick, part Vaudeville with a touch of Mel Brooks. Written by Ken Ludwig of Lend me a Tenor fame, it was directed by the Artistic Director of Village Theatre, Adam Immerwahr, and seemed very suited for children.

Matt and Ben – The Comedic Tale of Two Actors’ Dreams
This Season, going with the theme of “Sometimes I Dream”, Artswest starts with their production of Matt & Ben, an acidic two-person comedy written by Mindy Kaling and Brenda Withers. The play, directed by Zenaida Rose Smith, is a rather satirical look at the lives of famous American actors, Matt Daemon and Ben Affleck before their rise to stardom, and seek to fulfill their dreams of writing a script, the two discover the real and imaginary troubles of trying to work together. This production was performed for the first time in Seattle on September 7th, at the Artswest Theater in West Seattle. The play originally premiered at New York’s Fringe Festival in 2002 and was the winner of the 2002 Fringe NYC Award.

The Taming of the Shrew
Under the deft and creative direction of Laura Kessler, Last Leaf Productions opened Taming of the Shrew at the Seattle Outdoor Theatre Festival in Volunteer Park on Saturday. One of Shakespeare’s early comedies, Shrew is beloved by both of actors and audiences because of its slap-stick antics, repartee which is sheer linguistic gymnastics, but most of all because underneath everything lies an inverted Beauty and the Beast message with accurate psychological insight.
