Mae West’s The Drag is anything but!

I believe in censorship. I made a fortune out of it.”

Was one of Mae West’s less famous quotes probably because it was NOT a sexual double entendre. It does, however, refer to her 1926 play The Drag, which never opened on Broadway due to censorship as it deals with the reality of Gay life in 1920’s New York The Drag has been revived by Play Your Part productions at the Calamus Auditorium at Gay City in lower Capitol Hill, much to my delight.

The White Snake-Stuns not with Venom but with Beauty

Chinese Folktale-

The White Snake, React Theatre’s superb production of Mary Zimmerman’s play of the same name, now playing at 12th Ave Arts, was 95 minutes of sheer aesthetic beauty involving exquisite original music, incredibly creative visual effects, excellent acting and a truly amazing script. It was delightful in its simplicity and simply delightful.

One of the four great Chinese folktales, the tale of The White Snake has evolved over the years from a horror story to a romance. It has been performed as an opera in China, musical theatre in Hong Kong, and a dance piece in Taiwan. Zimmerman’s English version premiered at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in 2012. React’s production is the first all Asian Cast in the U.S. And what a cast it was!!!

Silhouette has Substance and Style to Spare

Silhouette Has Substance And Style To Spare

I think we’ve all encountered at least one moment in our theatergoing careers when the endless restaging of classic shows has worn a little thin. If my arbitrary projection of my own gripes onto you happens to ring even slightly true, allow me to recommend a production by the name of Silhouette, currently playing at Capitol Hill’s Annex Theatre. As an original science fiction acapella musical, Silhouette immediately stands out against the backdrop of a local theater scene steeped in Shakespeare and Tennessee Williams. Now of course, distinction on its own is not enough to carry a production. Which is why I’m very happy to report that Silhouette packs enough dramatic heft on its own merits to entertain a far broader audience than merely fans of the above genres.
