A Play of Opposites
It has been twenty-four years since the Seattle Repertory Theater has mounted a Tennessee Williams play. Artistic Director Jerry Manning has decided to return to this American icon during their 50th season, with a beautifully staged Glass Menagerie. It has proved worth the wait, for this is nearly a flawless production of one of Williams’ most personal plays.
Scientific/Military/Industrial/Academic Complex
The press release called A MOUSE WHO KNOWS ME, a science fiction musical comedy; however, I would call it a satire on the scientific/military/industrial/ academic complex. It is also one of the wittiest, funniest and most topical musicals I have ever seen.
I’ll be damned if I am going to feel sorry for any guy who is about to sleep with me.
Produced by Local Jewel, an excellent production of BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE is running at Theatre 4 in the Center House Armory at Seattle Center. Written by Leonard Gershe in the 1960’s, this production was set in 1972, an era before gay rights, disability rights and before the concepts of “enabling” and “control-freak” had entered main-stream society.
Director Maureen Hawkins has assembled eight short one acts written by Shel Silverstein and David Ives that focus on our reliance on language to aid us in finding love, peace, understanding and comedy in our world today.

The show’s premise is rich with potential and is definitely worth a continued polishing.
