As a Beaver and an Artist

Snappy Dialogue Diluted by Performance Whatever

Whenever a reviewer is assigned a “show” described as a “bizarre performance art” involving “clowing, improv, movement etc. ”, one puts the brakes on one’s expectations and does not exactly expect a well-made play. Given that limitation As a Beaver and an Artist, was in fact not only extremely entertaining, containing some excellent witty dialogue, but expressed, through black humor, profound truths about human existence and more importantly, the uncontrollable changes occurring in life.

Winter Bird

The Eclectic Theater is a small black box just off Broadway, which contains all the energy and soul that should be present in such a space. Clearly, this company of artists is quite passionate.

Winter Bird, written by Stephen Delos Treacy, tells the story of a simple librarian who is visited by a sultry woman and becomes transfixed by her, but not is all as it seems. Mr. Treacy clearly had a story to tell, likely inspired by his background in wilderness biology. The story seems to rest on mostly solid ground in the first few acts, but ends in a final showdown which left this reviewer perplexed.

Still Life-Every Day is the Same Until it isn’t

The Waiting Period before the Phone Call

In these days of terrorist attacks, much has been written about the terrorists themselves, the brave heroic rescuers, the victims, but little has been written about the horrible “waiting period” between the attack and THE PHONE CALL confirming the death of a loved one. Until now that is. Still Life, by Barbara Blumenthal-Ehrlich, produced by Florward Flux productions made a valiant attempt to present the angst of two relatives, a husband and his mother-in-law as they await the phone call, confirming that his wife, and her daughter have been caught up in a subway explosion in New York City.

Green Whales

Not Everything Kinky is Unhealthy

Usually when I go to see a show with a small cast, in the back room of a café, I do not expect to see such an amazingly polished script or cast, as Forward Flux Productions presented in the “auditorium” of the Kaladi Brothers Coffee Shop/Gay City bookstore in lower Capitol Hill last Friday night. Green Whales, by Lia Romeo, defied all my expectations , being a truly amazing script with superb dialogue, a coherent plot, a quirky premise and one of the quickest most engaging pieces of exposition I have ever seen. The excellent direction by Wesley Frugé, added to the delight.

The Real Memorandum: Trust No One

On a typical day at the office, Managing Director Josef Gross (played with appropriate increasing bafflement by Galen Joseph Osier), arrives at his desk, opens his Apple MacBook and begins to sift through his inbox. He comes across a memo in a new language, prints it, reads it out loud, has a WTF reaction, and proceeds to search around his offices to find out what it is written in and to get it translated. The language is Ptydepe. …

Wizzer Pizzer—A Campy Romp through Rainbow-Tinged Themes

Oz is a magical land. Since 1900 when Frank Baum published the original The Wizard of Oz anyone with the faintest acquaintance with this American cultural treasure will recognize it. Roll that into the gay culture’s fetishizing of Garland and her solo performances, stir in a bushel of camp, pore in a religious cult running a reparative therapy clinic; blend well. What you get is Wizzer Pizzer: Getting over the Rainbow …
