Come From Away Soars at the Rep

The Seattle Rep’s premiere of Come From Away could not have been timelier. The tragic events on the streets of Paris occurred only days earlier. The moment seemed to echo another era when western Europe grappled with darkness, of which Dickens noted “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” The play explores how immense tragedy somehow, someway brings out the best in humanity. To say that Come From Away is inspirational is greatly underselling the show. The work provides one of the most uplifting theatrical experiences imaginable.

Seattle Rep Offers World Premiere of Lizard Boy

Justin Huertas throws one crazy coming out party with his raw, exciting premiere of Lizard Boy. He wrote the book, composed the tunes and portrays the title character. Sitting in on its spirited opening night, I thought of Bob Dylan’s line, “Something is happening and you don’t know what it is…” The 90-minute one-act is a cockeyed blend of social commentary, high-tech romance, comic book super-hero clashes and a rock and roll show case. Some of it works well, some of it doesn’t, but it is all entertaining and remarkably original.

The Comparables—Gender Equality or Secret Handshake?

This show wonders “What does it take to be a high-ranking woman in the business world? Is their success defined by a different set of criteria than men? And, how are women helping or hindering themselves and each other in their rise to the top?” This show has focus and sparkle because the cast has mutual trust and the writing and direction has cut out anything that does not serve. The opening night was packed and it deserves a sold-out run.
