The Bee Man of Orn: Fun, Laughter and Morals
Among the many delights of the annual Seattle Outdoor Theatre Festival in Volunteer Park (SOFT) are the children’s shows; this year I had the pleasure of reviewing The Bee Man of Orn by Dacha Threatre, and sitting with a number of happy engaged children.
This company, which also produces grown-up theatre, had all the ingredients to entertain children: audience participation, improvisation, themes of conflict and betrayal, excellent story telling techniques, original songs and an exceptional ensemble cast.
The original script drew on many different fairy tales, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, the Ugly Duckling and many more with a little bit of Salvador Dali’s techniques from the Brunel’s film La Belle et La Bête thrown in. There is the Beeman, an outcast, a prince charming, a kitchen maid and my favorite character Malevela, the Bad Fairy the “evil resident fairy of the land”
Although I found the plot a tad complicated, it was a great show, with music, laughter and it kept the kids and adults truly entertained.
