Review-THE FUN AND FANTASY of THE MAGIC FLUTE

You know you’re in for a comic treat of an opera when after an introductory serving of serious music, you’re greeted with the specter of a hapless prince being mauled by a dragon. The Magic Flute is a mash-up of genres- part fairy tale, part circus and part religious pageant flouting astronomy and ancient Egypt. Here spectacle reigns supreme. The opera is packed full of sensory overload, with treats for the eyes, ears and the mind too. Seattle Opera’s newest production of The Magic Flute just opened at McCaw Hall at the Seattle Center and will run till May 21st.

Seattle Shakespeare’s Midsummer Taps into Something Special

Director George Mount notes that Seattle Shakespeare has been nurturing the idea of a 40’s musical style Midsummer Night’s Dream for twenty years. Their vision finally hits the stage in the troupe’s closing production for the season. Nir Sadovik wrote the original tunes used for the show. The concept: put Shakespeare’s lines directly into 30’s and 40’s style songs and intertwine the tunes within the Midsummer script.

Run a Marathon to get tickets to the “Money and Run” Marathon

To mark the 25th anniversary of Theater Schmeater, the first three episodes of Wayne Rawley’s popular and hilarious trailer trash send-up series, Money and Run will be revived. Three episodes Money Take Run, Of Nuns and Ninjas and Last Dance will be presented in a festival schedule, between May 10 and June 10. Directed by the author himself, the cast includes two of the most hilarious actors in town: Megan Ahiers and Lisa Viertel.

Something Incredible-Annex’s Research and Development Wing

As part of their Research and Development Wing project, Annex Theatre presented Something Incredible, written and devised by playwright Natalie Copeland and Emily Harvey along with an ensemble of seven highly talented female performers. In an evening of subtle humor, the play focused on the great metaphysical questions of science and religion: Why are we here? What are the scientific explanations for creation as well as the creation myths. How is human spirituality related to nuclear fission? And of course the greatest question of all: will we ever know the truth about these great questions.
