The Underbelly of the American Dream.

Standing ovations often are not well-deserved; however the truly magnificent production of Arthur Miller’s 1949 Pulitzer Prize winner Death of Salesman, at Artswest, more than deserved the standing ovation, it received at the curtain call on Saturday night. Artistic Director Mathew Wright, took this superb well-constructed play, found an outstanding cast and kept me riveted for three hours. It is clearly the best show I have seen all year.

Arthur Miller’s direct language in A View from the Bridge is bracing to ears tuned to Seattle Nice. Directed by Braden Abraham and styled as a tragedy, the first act is quite funny. It’s the shorter second act which makes it tragic.

Windfall productions produced two one-act plays by two of the “Greats” of the post World War II generation: Elaine May and Arthur Miller. Although Arthur Miller is more famous, as an American writer of international statute, Elaine May is perhaps more endearing to baby-boomers.
