Everything’s Fine Tonight LIVE! w/ Jordan is Seattle’s own late-night talk show. Webster’s dictionary defines “late-night” as happening or appearing late at night, and “talk show” as a program in which persons engage in discussions or are interviewed. Webster, we couldn’t have said it better ourselves! This show has it all: a guest, a desk, and a host. Oh! And also jokes. (Can’t believe we almost forgot the jokes.) This month features the hilarious Grace Penzell of Stoner Chicks Podcast, and I guess Jordan Eskenazi… of uhh… this show. Plus, an opening set from Ben Steitzer!

Hamlet and Macbeth meet Gormenghast and The Woman in Black (+ homoerotic swordfights) in this haunting supernatural revenge thriller.

Honored to Tell: The Force of Material Memory

The Seattle Black Spatial Histories Institute debuted its new exhibition Honored to Tell Saturday night to a full house at Wa Na Wari in Seattle’s Central District. Co-directed by Zola Mumford and Jill Freidberg, this moving exhibition presented a variety of artwork by the Institute’s first graduating cohort. Being surrounded by this art and the community that helped bring it to life was an impressive reminder of the importance of communal storytelling and our role within it.

The Good Doctor- Neil Simon does Chekhov

Simple Production =More Laughs and Entertainment

A delightful revival of Neil Simon’s The Good Doctor opened last night in the Auditorium of University Heights Center, produced by Penguin Productions, a teen theatre group, who last performed at the Seattle Outdoor Theatre Festival in Volunteer Park. The Good Doctor refers to the influential Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, M.D. as he experiences writers block and muses on the short stories he has written.

Pony World Theatre’s Hotdish opened this past Friday, November 3rd at 12th Avenue Arts Studio Theatre. Brendan Healy’s writing with Charolotte Peters’s directing combine beautifully to tell the humorous story addressing how to live with the past, the present, your family, and yourself.

These Shining Lives- A Tearjerker About The Radium Girls

Many of us have heard about the radium girls, but few of us have seen a piece of media about the radium girls like These Shining Lives. As Juli Bacon says in her opening message on Sunday afternoon, These Shining Lives is about the sacrifices workers make and the rights they fight for. These Shining Lights is about 4 coworkers, Catherine Donohue (played by Freda Jorgensen), Frances O’Connell (played by Christina Williams), Charlotte Purcell (played by Rebecca Gelzer), and Pearl Payne (played by Leah Carrell). They all paint luminescent clock faces using radium powder for Radium Dial Co. After 7 years as friends working at Radium Dial, their bodies start to disintegrate. Catherine decides to sue the company.

Measure for Measure- A Classic Adapted

Freehold’s Measure for Measure was a great adaptation of Shakespeare’s original. There is a beautiful set and choreography (Jessica Jabaris as Movement director) and an emotional performance by Ayo Tushinde, who plays Isabella as she tries to save her brother from dying under the hypocrisy of a new authority figure in Vienna.

Seattle Opera’s Alcina: Narcissistic Fantasies Undone- Too late to see it but an interesting production

Seattle Opera recently presented George Frederick Handel’s opera Alcina (the final performance was October 28), directed by Tim Albery. This was the company’s first staging of Alcina, although Seattle Opera has staged other Handel operas including Xerxes, Semele, and Giulio Cesare. Scenic and Costume Designer Hannah Clark placed the action in an unidentifiable time and place; characters wear contemporary dress and lounge on modern furniture, but accessorize with magic staffs, swords, and bits of Renaissance-era armor.

The Return- A Play About Palestine-Selling out-two performances added.

Dunya Production’s The Return on Thursday, October 26 started with a message from Edward Mast, one of the writers of The Return. He asked for a short moment of silence for the lives lost during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He says that he got questions about whether he was going to cancel the run of The Return. He admits he thought about canceling the show, but didn’t, because there is always a war going on, and it is always important to be conscious about the state of the world.

Andelana: A Tacoma Tale to Remember

I had the opportunity to see Andelana at Dukesbay Theater this Sunday. One faithful night in 1899, a 4-masted barque called The Andelana sank to the bottom of Commencement Bay, where it remains to this very day. There were no survivors save for one crewman who sought medical treatment for his tooth. Since that day, rumors have circulated around that ship, creating talks of ghosts and a curse. Tacoma playwright Roger Iverson brings to life the story of the Andelana on the stage of the Dukesbay Theater. This production was performed for the first time ever in Tacoma on October 27th at the Dukesbay Theater.
