A Piece of My Heart

It’s an incredible tragedy that when Americans remember our modern war heroes we largely forget about the thousands of heroines that served along with them.

During the Vietnam War, about 11,000 women were stationed in the country, according to the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Foundation. The majority served as nurses, about 90 percent, but some also served as physicians, intelligence officers and air traffic controllers.

Nearly all the women in Vietnam were volunteers.

“A Piece of My Heart” follows six young women thrown into a war zone on a story of calamity, confusion and inner conflict that is rarely seen in popular war stories. This story is unique not only in that it shows the war through women’s eyes but also because it focuses on battles behind the frontlines.

Dracula

Who could blame you for thinking that tales about blood-sucking vampires nowadays seem a bit tired and trite. After all, it has been almost 120 years since Bram Stoker introduced us to Dracula. It’s no wonder we hardly fear Count Dracula anymore. And it’s hard to imagine if any theatre company could make us fear him once again.

But the Tacoma Little Theatre can.

In its entire 98-year history, the Tacoma Little Theatre has never performed any adaptation of the classic story. But the performance they’ve put on this year would make you think they did it every year.

Past

Red Rover

In their first production, the Red Rover Theatre Company presents “Red Rover” written by John C. Davenport, the story of four 30-year-old men in 1983 reminiscing about their old day’s in high school, most doing so unwillingly with the exception of Dennis.
Played by Tedd Saint-James, Dennis drags his three old high school buddies in his rusty red convertible through their dilapidated town in a tour of weather-beaten places they used to visit as kids. Although the four never formed a group and only hung around Dennis individually, Dennis figures they can put any old animosities behind them and just enjoy the night.
But their evening is far from perfect.

The Toxic Avenger

In a world filled with noxious cough-inducing air pollution, the gut-wrenching smell of garbage dumps and DNA-altering toxic waste (i.e. New Jersey), who could possibly save us from ourselves? Who will save New Jersey? The Toxic Avenger will.

The STAGEright Theatre production is Sophia Federighi’s professional directorial debut and is a hilarious, animated and madcap adaptation of the 1984 cult film of the same name. The off-Broadway musical adaptation, originally written by Joe DiPietro and its music by David Bryan, has been produced throughout the country and has won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical.
