An evening of storytelling by Scot Augustson, Kelleen Conway Blanchard, and Bret Fetzer
Animal Saints and Animal Sinners, the interesting trio of rather eccentric storytellers has returned to 18th and Union with a delightful 90 minute show, Up from the Underground.
Kelleen Conway Blanchard’s brilliantly written Pet Sister, a 20 minute story displaying the influences of female authors Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters and a bit of Charles Addams thrown in started off the evening. Pet Sister was delivered with excellent comic timing and was full of wit and dramatic conflict of the gothic variety.
Scot Auguston’s lengthy epic about Queen Elizabeth II’s secret life, St. Bartholomew’s Confessor, was an imaginative fantasy about how the former Queen deals with the stresses of life. With a light rather ironic delivery it was highly entertaining.
Bret Fetzer, complete in old-fashioned storyteller attire, entertained the audience with a dramatic rendering of a story about a candle maker haunted by his deceased wife. Adopting a countrified accent and demeanor, he has a very animated style with some dry asides.
All in all it was, as always, a delightful evening. The Animal Saints do not rely on fancy technology to get their message across, but just verbal gymnastics to stimulate the imagination.
