Human bodies are self-generation cell machines that can produce an entirely new collection of cells every seven years. Some cells age and die in a few months, and others take a few years, but as that happens, new cells are being generated to keep the body functioning. This is what Nils desperately clings to because, when cells die, trauma should die with them, right? Too bad his ex-girlfriend just passed, and he’s forced back into a rich online scene that is far from healthy.

Juliette Carrilo’s I Am Not Your Perfect Daughter will make you laugh for two hours while also reaching deep into your heartstrings with its honest representation of grief, generational trauma, social inequalities, familial expectations and the struggles of undocumented and 1st generation immigrants in the United States. Based on Erika Sánchez’s novel, Seattle Rep’s latest production – which is also the West Coast premiere of the play – centers around Júlia, a 15-year-old Mexican American grappling with the death of her older sister, her parent’s expectations, her dreams of becoming a famous writer and her own coming of age.

Dirty Beasts: rough plays in early development

In a moving, unconventional festival, Parley presents seven short plays, seven renditions of life’s most momentous and most mundane moments. Written by Katherine Jett, Dustin Hageland, drew david combs, n8 Heneghan, Carolynne Wilcox, Asha Dore and Carol Y. Lee, each of these new works tackles an unsurmountable beast, from mental health illnesses and identity crises to generational trauma and childhood memories. A good combination of complex themes and humor, I was at points captivated by the raw monologue of a character with schizophrenia and at others brought to laughter by a religious chicken’s musical performance.
