The Wild Hearted (A Parley Workshop Production)

The Wild Hearted, Parley’s 33rd workshop since 2014, played before a capacity audience 0f about 90 people at West of Lenin Monday evening. Four millenials plan a party to celebrate history in the making on Election Night, 2016. Spoiler alert: the history they witnessed unfolding was not the one they had gathered to celebrate. The roller-coaster electoral college results of this election night rip and tear at the thin affections these acquaintances hold for one another. The lines are funny and consistently land. With just 5 weeks of walk-throughs and scripts in hand, minimal props and a few deft sound cues, the play came fully to life. All the actors put emotion and movement into their performances.

Seattle-based Sandbox Radio recreates the classic radio variety show with a local twist. This all-new episode, a New Leaf, features new work written by Scot Augustson, Andrew Creech, Lisa Halpern, Elizabeth Heffron, musings from Peggy Platt, plus special guest – LISA KOCH. Soprano MEGAN CHENOVICK and tenor AARON SHANKS lead a choir of Seattle’s best voices in the finale from Bernstein’s CANDIDE. Classic King FM’s MARTA ZEKAN once again joins the sfx team. JOSE ‘JUICY’ GONZALES, Sandbox Radio’s original music director and composer returns. New Leaf is scored with live music and live sound effects and features the hottest actors and musicians in town. It is produced, directed and hosted by Leslie Law and Richard Ziman.

Barbecue sizzles at Intiman

Not your average Dr. Phil intervention

I must admit that when I first heard about Intiman’s new show Barbecue, by Robert O’Hara, about two families, one black, one white, having family interventions for drug-addicted sisters, written by guy with an Irish last name, I cringed. HELP !!!!
The only help I needed was help to stop laughing and occasionally crying, so that the actors on stage could get on with the play. Yes it was a) that funny b) that sad and c)that uplifting. Since nothing can top the eloquence of the director, so I will just quote her because it pretty much sums up what I took away from the play: “ People tend to embrace the things that make us different rather than the complexities that make us all human beings. We want to turn that idea on its head with this story.” And did it ever!!!!! Without ever sounding serious or pompous, the script itself was outrageously witty and the delivery was wittily outrageous.

Like Penelope, MAIDEN VOYAGE Waits for Greatness

In the world of adapting ancient stories, inventing “the history behind the myth” is the order of the day. From Wolfgang Peterson’s film Troy to Esther Friesner’s young adult novel Nobody’s Princess, modern artists are bringing us “believable” versions of Homer’s epics, devoid of gods and monsters, and Parley Productions’ Maiden Voyage falls squarely within this trend.
True to its subtitle, “A Feminist Reimagining of The Odyssey,” Maiden Voyage weaves us a history behind the myth in which Penelope, the true author of The Odyssey, spins tales of her absent husband’s encounters with gods and monsters in order to raise a son longing for a father he has never known.

Busman’s Honeymoon Offers a Mysterious Ride

Taproot’s artistic director Scott Nolte pulled off some crafty sleuthing in finding a script for Dorothy Sayers’ novel Busman’s Honeymoon. He had enjoyed the book and learned that the story was originally written for the stage. The work hadn’t been in publication for some time, but eventually Nolte was able to track down a photocopy of the play from a publisher’s shelf. Lord Peter Wimsey would be proud! The show lays out a baffling mystery with a basketful of clues available for the audience to help puzzle out the solution.

A solo piece starring Brittany Allyson, Life, actually does answer, in only 8 minutes, one of the great questions which concerns some but not all homo sapiens. Is life about discovering the ultimate truth? In the end a simple answer suffices.
