A Christmas Memory-A reading at 18th and Union

What really happens when two childhood friends become writers and one puts the other in their novel?

The Harper Lee and Truman Capote relationship is one of the most famous literary friendships in the world. The unique aspect of the friendship of Truman Capote and Harper Lee was that, unlike most literary friendships, which usually start as adults or students, their friendship started in childhood, before each evolved into two of the most critically acclaimed, best selling and famous authors of the 20th Century. As a result, most of us are familiar with Truman Capote’s childhood, not from anything Capote wrote, but from the character Dill in Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. But in A Christmas Memory, Capote himself tells the story of his childhood in Monroeville, Alabama.

The Slipknot

Drugstores are Full of Euphemisms.

“Slipknot” is not an inappropriate word for this outstandingly performed and well-crafted solo play which opened at 18th & Union, (formerly New City) this weekend. Slip refers to casual jobs one just innocently “slips” into without realizing the knots which will bind us as we keep working at them day by day, week by week, month by month until we feel our brains have been reformatted to do only that one thing. Andrew Litzky’s superlative performance was, for me, a once in a life-time experience, because it was without a doubt not only the best solo performance I have ever seen, but probably, the best solo performance I will likely ever see.

Preview-A Child’s Christmas in…….. Alabama with Truman Capote!!!!

Betty Campbell and Patrick Lennon are pleased to present their fourth annual holiday reading of Truman Capote’s A Christmas Memory, directed by Julie Beckman, this Sunday evening at 18th and Union, at 6:00 pm.

A Christmas Memory is the story of seven-year-old Buddy and an elderly woman who is his distant cousin and best friend. The story captures the simple joys of the Christmas season and the inevitable heartbreak of growing up. This autobiographical short story from 1956 is a holiday classic and one of Capote’s most beloved works.

Miraculous-Miracle on 34th Street

There really is a Santa Claus

Tacoma Little Theater, a 98-year old community theater, presented one of the best of the modern Christmas tales this past weekend, Miracle on 34th St. Like many Christmas tales, it deals with questions of morality and generosity through an unrealistic plot. Originally a film in 1947, starring Maureen O’Hara and Natalie Wood, there is also a fair amount of wit and humor.

The Big Meal-Scrumptious

A Collision of Risk and Craft

Darragh Kennan, Artistic Director of New Century Theatre stated in the program notes of their latest production, The Big Meal, that NTC is interested in “the collision of risk and craft.” They may be INTERESTED in the COLLISION of risk and craft, but what I saw was an inspired perfect ALLOY of risk and craft, creating something that was more potent than either pure element.

The set and staging of The Big Meal, created the perfect medium to express the subject matter; the “moments” in our lives which define and reinforce our connection to our families. With an outstanding cast, an exceptionally able director, Makaela Pollock, a superb set, effective sound & lighting and a Master playwright, Dan LeFranc, the Big Meal served up a scrumptious evening.
