Deers or is it Cheers

For their last Mid-week show of their 30th Season, Annex Theatre, presented Deers by Marcus Gorman, an entertaining spoof of the long running TV Sit-com Cheers. In four episodes spread over 11 years, they “aired” the pilot from Season 1, jumped to Season 5 in the next scene, and showed scenes from Season 8 and 11 after the intermission. However, instead of humans inhabiting a bar, there was a tight-knit group of friends, all of whom were animals, from different species, having various kinds of healthy and unhealthy social bar-like interaction.

Curie Me Away did just that

Well-behaved Women Rarely Win Nobel Prizes

Although many people know that Marie Curie and her husband Pierre won the Nobel Prize for discovering radioactivity and some new elements, many people don’t know how many serious obstacles she had to overcome to win her first Nobel Prize in 1903. For example, by law as a woman Marie, (née Sklodowska) was forbidden to enroll in the university in Warsaw. All these obstacles as well as a few French ones, were illuminated in Curie Me Away, Matheater’s musical biography of this incredibly intelligent and tenacious woman.

Calculus a Musical? Really!

Dreaming of Differentials

A wet-dream encountering the inventor of Calculus (who incidentally probably died a virgin) is not exactly the high point of the week for any teen-age girl, especially when she previously considered Calculus a cure for insomnia. However, the full house at 18th and Union found Calculus the Musical, hysterically amusing as well as educational

PREVIEW Schlong Song-Sexual Bildungsroman

Too True Tales of Woody Shticks

“It’s the second cumming of Woody Shitcks solo sextravaganza! Stand-up storytelling, hip hop heroics, and emotionalnuddity collide in this smash-hit smackdown of sexual misadventure. Woody will take you on the scenic route to the bone zone-from his days inside a Puritan cult to his nights inside consenting adults-in this honest onslaught of hanky-panky hijinks!”

Although to some, this blurb might indicate that the show is ever so slightly over-the-top, I can truthfully say that yes it was, but at the same time, it was also endearing, universal and highly entertaining. Read the review of the show I saw in February:

The Truth Be Told

18th and Union, operating out of the New City space in the Central District, this past year has produced and hosted some incredible shows of the small cast variety, which have been a continuing source of creativity and joy. However, the latest show at 18th and Union, produced by the Training Grenades, however well-executed, was not exactly joyful.

Truth Be Told was four unnamed solo pieces, only one of which I would call a ten-minute play, the other three were solo monologues. Although the subject matter of three of the pieces were not quite my cup of tea, the actors, who all emanated from the graduate M.F.A. program at the UW, certainly demonstrated incredible talent and fine training.

Barbecue sizzles at Intiman

Not your average Dr. Phil intervention

I must admit that when I first heard about Intiman’s new show Barbecue, by Robert O’Hara, about two families, one black, one white, having family interventions for drug-addicted sisters, written by guy with an Irish last name, I cringed. HELP !!!!
The only help I needed was help to stop laughing and occasionally crying, so that the actors on stage could get on with the play. Yes it was a) that funny b) that sad and c)that uplifting. Since nothing can top the eloquence of the director, so I will just quote her because it pretty much sums up what I took away from the play: “ People tend to embrace the things that make us different rather than the complexities that make us all human beings. We want to turn that idea on its head with this story.” And did it ever!!!!! Without ever sounding serious or pompous, the script itself was outrageously witty and the delivery was wittily outrageous.

Life-All the answers in 8 minutes

Preceding Something Incredible the light-hearted examination of the cosmos’ profound questions, Annex Theatre presented an adaptation of Chuck Mee’s play Life, produced by –filament; a collab lab

A solo piece starring Brittany Allyson, Life, actually does answer, in only 8 minutes, one of the great questions which concerns some but not all homo sapiens. Is life about discovering the ultimate truth? In the end a simple answer suffices.
