Greed is Good
Under the director of Brennan Murphy, Seattle University will stage a revival of David Mamet’s 1984 Pulitzer prize winning play Glenngarry Glen Ross at Seattle University’s Lee Center.
The play depicts two days in the lives of four desperate Chicago real estate agents, who are prepared to engage in any number of unethical, illegal acts—from lies and flattery to bribery, threats, intimidation and burglary—to sell real estate to unwitting prospective buyers. It is based on Mamet’s experience having previously worked in a similar office.
Mamet wrote the play at an interesting point in history, when the idealism of the 1960’s had long been buried amid the rubble of the decade-long 1970’s recession while President Reagan’s Dickensian economic policies were ushering in a “greed is good” culture. “
“When I read the play, it is a stark reflection of what we are seeing happening in Washington D.C. in 2023, especially in the G.O.P. The play allows gender-fluid actors to stretch themselves artistically, vocally, and imaginatively to create characters that are dynamic” said director, Brennan Murphy.
I heartily recommend everyone see this play; David Mamet made theatre history in the 1970’s and 80’s and he captured the zeitgeist of the early Reagan years. A brilliant play coupled with a brilliant director, Brennan Murphy, along with gender fluid casting, promises an innovative outstanding production.
