1984-Even more relevant than in 1949 or 1984
It is with great pleasure that 18th and Union announces that Radial Theater Project’s production of 1984, which was canceled due to the pandemic two years ago, will re-open on March 10th.
1984 was English writer George Orwell’s last book, published about a year before his 1950 death just after the Second World War. It is the story of Winston Smith, an insignificant party member in the giant machine state of Oceania. Physically and mentally under the omnipresent eye of Big Brother, Winston has been caught struggling for scraps of love and freedom in a world awash with distrust and violence. With the brutal “assistance” of four Party Members who reenact scenes from his diary, Winston is forced to confess his Thoughtcrimes before an unseen inquisitor.
I heartily recommend this production;18th and Union always picsk winners. Two of Seattle’s best actors, K.Brian Neel and Marianna de Fazio are in the cast and with David Gassner as director and producter, it is sure to be a hit. Our current political climate with denial of reality,“fake news,” and the new form of “thought police,” i.e. cancel culture, it is even more relevant than it was in 1949. Orwell, a Democratic Socialist championed free speech, clear precise use of language and disliked the English upper class converts to Stalinist Communism.
