[TITLE OF SHOW]

What does it take for two guys in New York to create a Broadway musical? That’s exactly what Jeff and Hunter ask themselves in the first scene of “[title of show]”, a musical about the creation of a musical. This postmodern show is self-conscious in all the right ways, mocking the conventions of musical theatre while intentionally reproducing them with songs like “Untitled Opening Number.” The book and music by Hunter Bell and Jeff Bowen, respectively, are entertaining and witty, but they would fall flat without the right cast. With a set composed of only four chairs and a keyboard, it is impossible to overstate the importance of the actors in making this show a success, and the Balagan’s cast is phenomenal in bringing “[title of show]” to life.

Brian Lange and Ryan McCabe have great chemistry as Hunter and Jeff. They are quirky and likable as they alternate between talking about reality television, arguing about grammar, and writing a hit musical. Both actors embody their characters in a very real way, which is ultimately what makes this show work. Claudine Mboligikepelani Nako as Heidi and Kate Jaeger as Susan bring solid talent to the stage as well, playing the two women who are recruited to help create and perform in “[title of show].”  Chris Distefano plays Larry/music director. He is fantastic on the keyboard, although he refuses to speak until Jeff tells him, “It’s okay, Larry. We worked it out with the union so you can talk.”

“[title of show]” is a delightful piece of metatheatre. It is an absolute must-see for fans of musical theatre, who will appreciate the constant references to all things Broadway (my personal favorites were the hilarious “Into the Woods” references sprinkled throughout the show). And for anyone who’s skeptical of musicals, this show provides 90 minutes of poking fun at the hokey lyrics and canned dance moves that can be found in even the greatest works of musical theatre. There’s something for everyone!
