Drama in the Hood is about both today and tomorrow when it comes to the theatre scene in the South Sound. Toward that end, we are recommending our readers support and patronize Tacoma’s Woodrow Wilson High as they present their rendition of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” This “tale as old as time” is cast by students, but supported and guided by some of the region’s best and brightest. Tacoma Little Theatre’s Chris Serface is directing. Jeff Bell is handling the musical end of things and the uber-talented Ashley Roy is choreographing the movement of the production. It should be a rewarding experience for the folks lucky enough to see it, but we’re dead certain it is a rewarding experience for the kids who are cast in the show.
Fans of Disney should definitely plan to attend as they can look forward to being swept away into an enchanted musical. Belle feels trapped in her provincial town, while a prince is trapped inside the body of a hideous beast! What hope can there be for these two? Somehow we know that love will conquer all, because it does on stage and screen.
Maybe the freedom these two crave can be found if the beast can learn to love and be loved. Then the spell will be broken and he can be transformed to his former princely self. That’s what we must hope, because anything less and and his household will be doomed for all time.
This classical musical love story is a magical tale that comes to life with unforgettable characters, and a stunning score including, “Be Our Guest,” “Gaston,” “Human Again,” and the Oscar-winning title song, “Beauty and the Beast.”
