All Her Earthly Days (And Other American Tales), written and performed by Bret Fetzer filled 18th and Union’s small stage Saturday night.
Fetzer is a brilliant storyteller, I had genuine chills at certain points while read through his three original stories. They were an eerie mix of folk-lore and magical realism, delivered in a frank, wry voice that frequently produced chuckles in the audience. The tales ranged from a small town in Texas inhabited by literary characters who walk off the page in the moonlight, to an automobile factory full of bones and one very alive child, and finishing on a tear soaked walk to heaven. Between Fetzer’s calm cadence and the dim lighting, the show was evocative of a particularly well-spoken night around the campfire.
Though his show only ran at 18th and Union through Saturday, Fetzer is a frequently on some stage or another in the city, he’s worth checking out.
